Athletics

Greenock Glenpark Harriers proudly nominate Jill Aikman for Volunteer of the Year for her exceptional commitment to the club and community. A Level 2 athletics coach, Jill volunteers seven days a week while working full-time and raising a family. Over the past year, she has given more than 500 hours, coaching everyone from under-11s to adult women. A key leader in the women’s section, Jill developed ladies-only gym sessions supporting women—particularly those experiencing menopause—to build strength, confidence, and wellbeing. She fosters inclusivity through practical coaching, social events, and group activities like open water swimming. Jill also mentors new volunteers, supports junior athletes, and promotes a positive, inclusive environment. Humble yet impactful, Jill is a true role model and community builder.

DAVY BYRNE
Football

Davy has devoted his life to supporting children with additional needs across Inverclyde. He runs Greenock United, a football team for ASN children, giving countless hours of his time freely and selflessly. As a teaching assistant at Craigmarloch School in Port Glasgow, Davy spends every break and lunchtime playing football with pupils and also manages the school team, which competes in an ASN league. Known for his calm and nurturing nature, he is deeply respected by all who know him. Davy has made a lasting difference in the lives of many children, boosting their self-esteem and helping them feel safe, included, and valued. Through his tireless work, he sets an inspiring example of care, dedication, and leadership.

CHRIS CURLEY
Athletics

Chris, organiser of the Port Glasgow 10K, launched the event with support from Port Glasgow Runners to encourage local people to get active. Since its beginning, the race has grown steadily each year, becoming a popular fixture in the community calendar. Chris takes on every aspect of the organisation—planning the route, securing funding, and coordinating volunteers and marshals to ensure the event runs smoothly. This year’s race was fully booked, a testament to its increasing popularity. Open to all ages and abilities, the event not only promotes health and fitness but also brings the community together and showcases Port Glasgow in a positive light. Thanks to Chris’s dedication, the 10K continues to go from strength to strength.
